"The Kiss"

Day 29 - Down to the last two days of The 30 Day Painting Challenge
and I'm happy to still be producing little studies for it.
However......I am looking forward to it being over for several reasons.........

1)  It shall be good to work again with large brushes on large canvases
with my abstract expressionism and continue to build up a body of work for galleries.
I might use a few of the small studies as jumping off points.

2)  I have ideas from our trip to Europe in 2015, for some new 'Narratives' pieces.
I want to set up my EBay & Etsy site to sell them.

3)  Figure out if by some chance I have learnt something concrete from this endeavor,
other than the knowing-I-accomplished-it satisfaction.
My goal was to become faster at decisions of design, application and completion.
In other words .... speed up my slow, meticulous process and produce more art work!

4)   I hope that some of the fatigue & stress of having to complete a small painting
every day, as well as working on a 6 foot commission
(which is nearly finished too) will be reduced.

I have my sweet and wonderful husband to thank for his patience
and for doing everything to keep us in meals, washed clothes and clean house!

Maybe I'll have time to get a haircut, walk on the beach, dig in the garden............ have a life?
Nah....probably not :-)

"Steps" is big bro to "Stages".
They hang out on the wall together, in their crisp white double mats,

"Stages" by Gillian St George

Whenever I work in only black, white and red, I wonder why I'm not doing it more often.  This limited palette naturally gravitates me to a more 'zen' design and my only regret is that I've neglected my calligraphy training. There is an unhurried simplicity in the application and one could get into a meditative state (see note below).
A lovely little book I reference quite often is
"The Spirit of the Chinese Character" by Barbara Aria and Russell Eng Gon.
My "365 Days of Tao" tries to be a daily read,
and is incorporated into the end of my yoga practice.

That being said..... if I didn't have the country music radio playing I could say I was meditating while painting!  However, as anyone who listens to country music knows, it is lively, repetitive and definitely NOT meditative!

"Merging" by Gillian St George

I think January is sailing by, yet when I look back over this 30 Day Challenge,
it feels like eons ago that I started it.
Why does 'time' have more than one length, depending upon the activity?
I think it's bizarre....and I know I'm not alone in this thinking!
I am looking forward to The Challenging ending on the 30th yet I am loving every minute of it and shall miss it!
More bizarre-ness!

When I step back from the Challenge I hope I can actually see and feel any changes that have taken place.  I want to be able to fully appreciate the benefits of sticking to a 'project' like this, thru thick and thin.

Have you ever done a Challenge of any type before?  And what did you get out of it?

"Mirage" by Gillian St George

My brain is demanding simplicity and I like to listen to it's voice now and then.
So here is another calming piece for the day.

If you're like me, you could have two voices:  one might be the lazy voice,
and the other is the prodding-me-to-get-on-with-it-voice.
Or one voice whines "I can't" and the other forcefully replies "YES YOU CAN!"

I long ago named these two brainiacs and in an earlier blog (now defunct)
I introduced them, so forgive me if you have already heard this.
Please meet Itch and Scratch.
Just don't ask me which one is which as they like to switch
backwards and forwards just to add to life's little challenges -
that way they figure, I'll never really know which is the best voice to listen to :-)
Hmmmm..........

I wonder..... if the Challenge had been in July.....
would my subject matter have focused so intently on the weather?

Are other Challengers motivated/inspired/haunted/enthralled/captured
by their current weather for a subject??

Happy Saturday!

"Boundless" by Gillian St George

What I love about Abstract Expressionist / Non Representational art is that it allows us, the viewer,  to become personally involved in the experience of the piece. Instead of the artist doing the work of translation of a distinctly recognizable subject, like a landscape or a still life of an apple, with non representative work it's the viewer who is given the chance to do the translating and to figuratively speaking, be the artist.

It might begin with the shapes within the design which remind us of something tangible - possibly familiar to everyone, but more often than not, unique to ourselves, from our own life experiences.  The details of the design, from simple lines or complicated strokes, to crisp edges or blended forms, can be energetic, decisive, edgy, whimsical, playful or flowing and can draw the eye to an area for further study.  The choice of colors usually evoke personal emotions ranging from joy, happiness and thoughtfulness to calmness, serenity and enthusiasm.

We find ourselves either no longer interested and we move on or we become curious and drawn in and the relationship begins. We study the first piece but then find we want to know and see and experience more so we seek out the artist's other works to peruse and their reasons for painting them -  and in so doing we learn of the life of another human being.  And although that person may live in a different culture or even different time frame from us, there is a unique connection already established, if only tenuous at first, but one which grows steadily as each studied painting personally resonates within us.

"Emergence " by Gillian St George

This painting is a diptych, two paintings of 10 x 20 together and I spent several days on it, as it is much larger than the 8 x 8 Challenge paintings
that I've been working on this January.
However, I started out painting on a single canvas, 10 x 20, and I didn't think about it having a partner and becoming a 20 x 20 diptych until it was fairly far along.

Which was another learning opportunity as I quickly realized  - turns out it's a smart idea to paint the two canvases side by side for a connecting design, and it's much easier to mix the same sharing colors, and therefore saving a lot of time!
Oh well.  Live-y learn-y.

I love the display flexibility of a diptych (2) or triptych (3).  They can be separated and hung on either side of a window for example, or displayed long, either horizontally or vertically,
for a skinny display above a love-seat or hung both together as shown above.

Have a fun day!

"Diversion" by Gillian St George

The weekend started out well in regards to accomplishing some painting.
Yesterdays painting "Transition" seemed to paint itself and I was happily patting myself on the proverbial back.  Then I painted "Diversion" below and I felt even more smug.  Things were going according to plan.  I would get a lot done this weekend.
Little did I know that there really would be a diversion.....

THEN..... in the middle of the night, the phone's emergency alert beeped loudly,
waking us out of sleep and signaling that we were to take immediate cover
because of  tornados in the area.  Yikes!
It's something that happens so rarely in SW Florida, like almost never,
that it was quite alarming to say the least -  to have to take cover in the laundry room,
while very noisy winds went screeching by.
Within half an hour all was quiet again, and this morning we read on the news
that various homes nearby had been destroyed and people had died.
Our prayers go out to the families of the victims,
and we are so very grateful that all is well with us, our family and friends.
It's at times like these that we say thank you, over and over, for all our many blessings.

Needless to say, I've been a little groggy today
and my artistic brain has struggled to even work on my commission.
My painting "Diversion" came a little too close to home.
It never pays to be smug.......

"Transition" by Gillian St George

I have been for years an online subscriber to The Painter's Keys -
twice-weekly newsletters of the entertaining, funny, helpful, astute
and seriously talented Canadian artist, Robert Genn.
When he passed last year, his equally capable daughter Sara
continued on the tradition, much to the relief of artists' everywhere!

Check it out!  Not only funny but very well thought out.

"Musings" by Gillian St George

I love working on Arches paper.
Maybe it goes back to my years as a watercolorist and the happy memories of painting
alongside my mother, sitting in the car in a country lane in England,
balancing paint water and cups of tea and trying not, in a absent-minded moment,
to use the tea to rinse the brush!
However, as I'm using acrylic paint and not watercolor,
maybe the comparison is more likely between paper and canvas.
I find that paper is an absorbing, well textured and quick surface to paint on
that accepts both a sheer wet glaze or a thick juicy brush load of acrylic paint.
Whereas canvas requires a fair many layers of paint
before the weave of the canvas no longer shows through,
and when time is short, I'll take any extra help I can get!

"Above Below" by Gillian St George

I anticipated the Challenge paintings to be in addition to my normal studio work.
I hoped they would be experimental, that the pressure to be completed in a timely
manner would stop me from over-working a piece.   A way to have a break
from my commission work that tends to be planned out, detailed, layered
and can take weeks or months to complete.
Sounds reasonable don't you think?
But of course, they take much longer to complete than I had anticipated!

And the past couple of days I found I did not have time for one, despite my intentions.
I am working on a large commission and could not fit in a challenge piece.
So I would be very disappointed but for the fact that.....  my inner voice stepped in and gave me a good shake - reminding me of an important attitude fact.

One that I learnt 15 years ago when we were remodeling our house.
We were playing the role of architect, contractor and clean-up crew
and at the end of every exhausting day we would look around at the remodel,
and get very excited at what had been accomplished.
We were loving it all.  The hard work and the progress.

Until we were close to the end of the remodel,
and expecting company from England..........
and suddenly we felt very stressed.  Why?  What had changed?
And then I realized that we had changed our focus.
We were worried about the unfinished jobs, what was left to do.
We were not seeing the progress and what had been accomplished.

A story that we are all familiar with I daresay......

So I'm delighted to have another little challenge painting to show you
and am truly astounded that I've been able to paint as many as I have so far!
