How fortunate I am as an artist,
that I can surround myself with glorious colors when I paint.
that I can surround myself with glorious colors when I paint.
But there's many a decision to be made
to get a non-representational painting to look and feel just right.
to get a non-representational painting to look and feel just right.
Place a certain color alongside another,
and just like in a sad relationship, the two don't seem to hit it off together.
It's all an experiment....choosing the right color that brings out the best in both colors.
As someone once said "There is no bad color - just a good color in the wrong place".
And then there's the quantity of a color, and also the placement of the stroke.
Neither of those actions are without thought, feeling, intuition, abandon,
careful consideration, joy and excitement.
Should the painting be interesting in detail when studied close-up,
or should it rely on being strong when viewed from a distance?
I aim for both.
I aim for both.
As all non-rep artists know - it is very challenging to paint without a photo,
to paint with no external guide, and to rely on whatever is inside the heart and brain
to produce a piece of art that can hold it's own in the world.
We just make it look easy!!
We just make it look easy!!

Totally LOVE Oceana! The way you've juxtaposed colors, in combination with the thin bold lines and the squiggles. I am in awe. I am new to non-representational painting and yours inspires me.
You DO make it look easy. Love this :)
Really appreciate the great feedback, Dotty & Sheila. Helps me to keeping chugging along! Gillian
